I'm one of the latter kind of reader. Unless the book is an exceptional specimen, you might as well mark it up if you feel like it. Assuming you paid for it, it's your book. It's really annoying to come across a nice copy of a book in a second-hand shop, only to find someone's birthday greetings scrawled inside.
