Thanks for the ...‘Militia in the Land of The Free’.
Thanks for the reading of the photo. Any thoughts on the incongruence of the dinosaur tag at the subjects collar :)
Won’t comment on the context - there’s enough division without dragging a photography discussion down, and I’m not from the US.Not THAT Ross Cameronnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-654754338632526091.post-36032705179278324772020-02-18T11:55:51.319-08:002020-02-18T11:55:51.319-08:00Protest, assertion of rights? No way...

MikeMike C.https://www.blogger.com/profile/11279776665185060446noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-654754338632526091.post-6615790327992388962020-02-18T07:02:07.685-08:002020-02-18T07:02:07.685-08:00Oh dear. The British ramblers did not sneak along the paths at night to maintain rights of way, after all, the point is overtly to be seen and noted.

The dude looks like a guard because he has taken up his "standing a post" posture, "guarding" something he has zero authority to guard, which pose he either learned from video games or from actually being in the military. He's fully aware of the photo-op unless he's incredibly high.

Still, it's interesting to me that the photographer shot it this way and pumped this shot out there to be seen.
amolitorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15743439184763617516noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-654754338632526091.post-4890307526128926112020-02-18T06:20:03.026-08:002020-02-18T06:20:03.026-08:00I am myself quite fascinated by the recent appropr...I am myself quite fascinated by the recent appropriation of face covering by these militia types.

On the one hand, sure, there is an essentially infinite army of prog-left weirdos who will do everything they can do without leaving their basement dwelling to harass one of these mooks, if they could ID them from photos. Turns out you can make a guy's life pretty miserable with your phone, if you're dedicated enough. So, if you're not sure your boss is going to love getting 10,000 phone calls about you, maybe a thing on your face.

On the other hand, dude, you look like an Ay-rab.
amolitorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15743439184763617516noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-654754338632526091.post-36963390925532390982020-02-18T02:48:44.856-08:002020-02-18T02:48:44.856-08:00The event is interesting, the photo is not, except...The event is interesting, the photo is not, except as a document of an event, and as yet more evidence of a peculiarly American malaise. It looks staged because it is staged, and yet the photographer has taken no pictorial advantage of a (presumably) static and co-operative subject. It is readable, as you propose, but the photographer has contributed less to any "meaning" than has the idiot posturing with his gun and 1000-yard stare (who might as well be a mannequin in some museum).

I say "peculiarly American" but, aesthetically speaking, it is notable how the Rambo-isation of real conflicts (the improvised uniforms, the bandanas, etc.) has spread around the world, just like jeans and baseball caps. This guy reminds me of nothing so much as the murderous militia thugs of the Balkan conflicts of the 1990s, most of whom were also defending perceived rights or avenging long-held grievances.

Photography aside, any society which permits and even encourages such deadly posturing in public spaces is in deep trouble. The cork is already half-way out of the bottle...

MikeMike C.https://www.blogger.com/profile/11279776665185060446noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-654754338632526091.post-67668421385727714152020-02-17T18:16:50.975-08:002020-02-17T18:16:50.975-08:00It looks like he has some sort of picture ID on hi...It looks like he has some sort of picture ID on his hip, to go with the mask to hide his identity.
