FSA Photo of the Week

Commentary after the cut.

This is good solid "street" photography here. A little tableau, two pairs of men and a couple singletons on the left. There's that mixed sense of understanding what's going on, and not understanding it entirely. A fortuitous arrangement of forms and space. Having the pictures in the store window behind is a nice touch of wit, but does make that space a little busy. This is a photograph that would genuinely benefit from being printed well, as opposed to being rudely scanned and archived.

Shot by Howard Hollem, Edward Meyer or MacLaugharie. New York, New York. June 6, 1944. Times Square and vicinity on D-day.
